Joseph, son-in-law and eventual successor of Annas as high priest, a position he held from 18 to 36 or 37 CE. He would, accordingly, appear to have been the high priest at the time of the trial of Jesus (Matt 26:3; Matt 26:57; John 18:13; John 18:24), although (Luke 3:2 and Acts 4:6) suggest a more complicated scenario. (John 11:49-52 and John 18:14) ascribe to Caiaphas the judgment that it was “better . . . to have one man die for the people” with reference to Jesus.
