Naboth

Nay´both

The owner of a vineyard adjacent to a royal estate in Jezreel (1Kgs 21). Ahab the king wanted to buy the vineyard, but Naboth refused to sell it. Seeing that Ahab was despondent, Jezebel, his wife, procured false testimony against Naboth and he was stoned to death by the villagers. Ahab hurried to Jezreel to confiscate Naboth’s property, but encountered the prophet Elijah, who pronounced God’s judgment on him.
