Ahithophel

Uh-hith´uh-fel

One of David’s advisers, noted for his wisdom (2Sam 16:23; 1Chr 27:33-34). He proved disloyal to David during the revolt of Absalom (2Sam 15:17) and became the latter’s chief counselor. When his advice was ignored, he committed suicide (2Sam 17:23). Bathsheba, David’s wife and Solomon’s mother, may have been his granddaughter (2Sam 11:3; 2Sam 23:34). His house was in Giloh, a town in Judah (2Sam 15:12).
