Ur

Oor

One of the oldest cities of southern Mesopotamia. Ur, modern Tell el-Muqayyar, lies ten miles west of the Euphrates, on whose bank it stood in antiquity, before the river changed course. In the OT, Ur is mentioned four times (Gen 11:28; Gen 11:31; Gen 15:7; Neh 9:7), in each instance as the home of the patriarch Abraham before his migration to Haran and Canaan.
